English

Using a Canadian East Coast RoCon ship case study, this paper simulates well-to-wake GHG emissions for VLSFO baseline versus LNG, ammonia, hydrogen, and methanol. It develops four decarbonization pathways combining green fuels and speed reduction, and discusses design, availability, and health/safety implications for reaching IMO net-zero targets.

📝 gxceed 編集解説 — Why this matters

In the global GX context

Shipping decarbonization sits at the center of global transition finance and Scope 3 accounting, as IMO rules will cascade into corporate disclosure under ISSB/CSRD. This case study adds empirical fuel-pathway comparison useful for maritime and cargo-owner transition planning.

📄 Abstract(原文)

Ships transport the majority of global goods and produce a significant portion of worldwide greenhouse gas emissions. To address these emissions, the International Maritime Organization has introduced the Net-Zero Framework which outlines annual targets to reduce emissions from ships. A possibly effective way to reduce emissions and meet these targets is by using alternative fuels, yet the pathways to their implementation remain uncertain. This paper investigates decarbonization pathways through a case study of a RoCon ship operating on the East Coast of Canada. Using a well-to-wake approach, the greenhouse gas emissions are simulated for a baseline case using very low sulfur fuel oil, and are compared to four alternative fuels: liquified natural gas, ammonia, hydrogen, and methanol. By considering transitioning to green fuel and reductions in operational speed, four decarbonization pathways are developed. This paper then highlights the ramifications associated with using each fuel type, including design requirements, availability, and health and safety considerations. The paper aims to communicate the differences in potential pathways to reduce emissions and achieve net-zero shipping.
