English

Using hourly Spanish power data, an LSTM forecasts regional carbon emission factors as dynamic carbon signals for a simplified load-shifting dispatch simulation. The LSTM beats persistence and seasonal naive baselines but not Ridge regression. Under 6% transferable load, emissions fall 0.114% versus economic dispatch while cost rises ~0.040%; break-even requires a carbon price above ~98.23 EUR/tCO2.

In the global GX context

This study contributes to global discussions on dynamic carbon signals for demand-side flexibility, relevant to Scope 2 accounting and hourly matching under emerging disclosure frameworks. It highlights that deep learning does not automatically outperform linear baselines and that carbon price thresholds determine cost-effectiveness, informing ISSB/CSRD-aligned operational decarbonization strategies.

📄 Abstract(原文)

Abstract Regional power-system carbon intensity varies with load, renewable generation, fuel mix, imports, and market signals. Static emission factors can therefore misrepresent the low-carbon value of shifting demand from one hour to another. This revised manuscript presents a prediction-dispatch framework that estimates hourly regional electricity carbon emission factors and uses them as dynamic carbon signals in a simplified load-shifting dispatch simulation. The forecasting component uses an LSTM model and compares it with persistence, seasonal naive, Ridge regression, random forest, and multilayer perceptron baselines on the public hourly Spain electricity demand, generation, price, and weather dataset. The LSTM achieves an MAE of 23.65 kgCO 2 /MWh and an RMSE of 30.17 kgCO 2 /MWh for 24-hour forecasting, improving over persistence and seasonal naive baselines but not over Ridge regression, which obtains the lowest error on this dataset. The dispatch component is intentionally limited to a 6% transferable-load simulation rather than a full unit-commitment or AC power-flow model. Under this simplified setting, LSTM-driven dynamic carbon signals reduce average daily emissions from 172,655.87 tCO 2 to 172,459.68 tCO 2 relative to economic dispatch, a reduction of 0.114%, while increasing electricity cost by approximately 0.040%. A break-even analysis shows that this LSTM scenario becomes cost-composite favorable only when the effective carbon price exceeds about 98.23 EUR/tCO 2 . The results support the operational value of dynamic carbon signals under the stated assumptions, but they also show that strong linear baselines, feature-availability auditing, coefficient disclosure, and fuller dispatch validation are necessary before claiming a general advantage for deep learning or complete low-carbon dispatch optimization.
