English
Using a Prais–Winsten regression with Beck–Katz panel-corrected standard errors, this paper estimates how renewable penetration and energy-intensity shifts shaped per-capita CO2 emissions across 18 APEC economies from 2001 to 2023, controlling for energy balance, economic scale, and the shadow economy. Renewables, improved energy balance, and lower energy intensity all reduce emissions, while expanding formal and informal economic activity raises them—scale effects outweigh efficiency gains. It concludes APEC economies are pivotal to global clean-energy pathways and efficiency policy.

📝 gxceed 編集解説 — Why this matters
In the global GX context
For global disclosure scholarship, this paper supplies macro-level empirical backing for transition-plan assumptions used under TCFD/ISSB: it quantifies how renewable deployment and efficiency gains translate into emissions reductions, and warns that growth and informal activity can offset them—useful context for scenario analysis and transition-finance credibility assessments.
📄 Abstract(原文)
International pressure to reduce the emissions of greenhouse gases has turned scientists' focus to determining the actual environmental impact of the expansion of clean energy and the improvement of energy efficiency at the macro-economic level. This paper does not focus on the renewable-energy penetration per se, but on how the renewable-energy penetration, combined with shifts in energy intensity, translates into per capita carbon dioxide emissions in 18 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) economies between 2001 and 2023. The empirical approach builds on this core relation, incorporating global energy-balance conditions, overall economic performance, and the shadow-economy footprint, while using a Prais–Winsten regression with panel-corrected standard errors (Beck–Katz PCSEs) to account for the serial correlation and contemporaneous cross-sectional dependence. The empirical results show that modern renewables increased, energy balance indicators improved, and energy intensity decreased all have an impact on the reduction of per capita CO2 emissions, reflecting the environmental benefits of structural energy system changes in the region. Scaling up economic activities and informal economic activities, in contrast, put upward pressure on carbon emissions, indicating the existence of scale effects which outweigh efficiency gains. All of these findings suggest that as key parties to global energy demand, APEC economies have a significant role to play in shaping global energy pathways through the deployment of clean-energy technologies, the enforcement of energy efficiency policies, and the cooperation with non-member economies to support a cleaner, more resilient global energy future.
